How many calories do you burn when you sleep?

How many calories do you burn when you sleep? This calculator estimates it from body weight, hours slept and sleeping's 0.95 MET value in the Compendium of Physical Activities.

Sleep burns slightly less energy than quiet wakefulness. Energy expenditure dips in slow-wave sleep and rises in REM, so this is an estimate rather than a measurement. Sleeping more is not a weight-loss strategy in itself, although short sleep is associated with worse appetite regulation.

kcal = 0.95 × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200 × sleep minutes

The optional BMR comparison uses Mifflin–St Jeor. The estimates disagree slightly because one is measured activity intensity and the other is a regression.

Sleeping calories FAQ

How does this calculator estimate sleeping calories?

It converts your weight to kilograms and applies sleeping's 0.95 MET value to the minutes you slept.

Why is the result not the same as my BMR?

The sleep estimate uses an activity-intensity method. The optional BMR comparison uses the Mifflin–St Jeor regression spread across 24 hours, so the estimates can differ slightly.

What information is needed for the BMR comparison?

Enter age, sex and height together with body weight and hours slept. Height is required by the Mifflin–St Jeor equation.

Does sleeping burn more calories than being awake?

Sleep generally burns slightly less than quiet wakefulness. Energy expenditure dips in slow-wave sleep and rises in REM.

Are my values saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and this tool does not send your values over a network.
