How the REM sleep calculator works
This REM sleep calculator uses a simple repeating sleep-cycle model to place a broad REM-heavy window near the end of your night. A sleep cycle averages about 90 minutes, and adults commonly complete about 4–6 cycles.
The model treats the final two cycles, or about 90–180 minutes before wake-up, as the likely REM-heavy window because REM periods tend to lengthen toward morning. This is a population-average estimate, not a measurement; only a sleep study measures sleep stages.
Cutting sleep short can cost disproportionately more REM than deep sleep because deep sleep dominates early cycles and the longest REM comes in the final cycles before waking.
