How this sleep efficiency calculator works

This sleep efficiency calculator turns two nightly timing estimates into a simple routine metric: the share of time in bed that you spent asleep.

It also shows the awake-time gap between getting into bed and falling asleep or waking. This can help you review timing patterns alongside consistent bedtime tracking, but one reading is not a diagnosis.

Sleep efficiency is a population reference, not a verdict about your health. A clinician decides what your sleep pattern means.

Sleep efficiency = time asleep ÷ time in bed × 100; awake time = time in bed − time asleep

85% or above is a commonly used threshold for normal, while below 85% is often the first thing looked at in insomnia. These are reference points, not a diagnosis; only a clinician can interpret your situation.

Sleep efficiency calculator FAQ

What is sleep efficiency?

Sleep efficiency is total time asleep divided by total time in bed, multiplied by 100. The calculator also subtracts time asleep from time in bed to show the awake-time gap.

What counts as time in bed?

Enter the minutes from getting into bed to getting up. Enter your estimate of actual sleep separately.

What does 85% mean?

85% or above is a commonly used population reference for normal sleep efficiency. It is not a diagnosis, and a clinician decides what an individual result means.

Is one result enough to assess my sleep?

No. A single reading is not a diagnosis. Use your own timing records and discuss persistent concerns with a clinician.

Are my values saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, and this tool does not save the values you enter.
