How much deep sleep do you need, in hours per night

Most healthy adults spend about 13–23% of the night in deep sleep and 20–25% in REM. On a seven-hour night, that works out to roughly 55–97 minutes of deep sleep and 84–105 minutes of REM. Both are proportions, so both grow when the night gets longer.

Sleep labs split the night into four stages. N1 is the brief drowsy transition, usually under 5% of the night. N2 is the bulk of it, around 45–55%. N3 — slow-wave sleep, what your tracker labels "deep" — runs about 13–23% in healthy adults. REM takes the remaining 20–25%.

Those figures are averages from overnight polysomnography, and they describe ranges rather than targets you're supposed to hit. Here's what the two stages people actually ask about look like as clock time:

One night outside those bands means very little. Alcohol, a late workout, a fever, a cold bedroom, a poor night beforehand — all of it shifts the mix. Where you sit across two or three weeks is the number worth reading.

How much REM sleep do you need per night?

About 20–25% of total sleep time, so roughly 90 minutes to two hours for most adults. REM is distributed unevenly, though, and that's what makes the figure fragile. The first REM period of the night can last only a few minutes; the last one, in the hour or two before you'd wake naturally, often runs 30 minutes or longer.

Sleep moves in cycles of roughly 90 minutes — anywhere from 70 to 120 — four to six times a night, and the mix of stages inside each cycle changes as the night progresses. Cut an hour off the end and you don't lose an even slice of everything. You lose mostly REM, because the REM-heavy cycles are the ones you skipped.

What happens during deep sleep

Brain activity slows into large delta waves, heart rate and blood pressure drop, breathing steadies, and growth hormone is released in pulses. This is the stage tied to physical restoration — tissue repair, immune function — and to stabilizing the day's factual, declarative memories. It's also the hardest stage to be pulled out of. That thick, disoriented feeling when an alarm catches you mid-N3 is sleep inertia, and it can linger for half an hour.

What happens during REM sleep

The EEG starts to resemble wakefulness. The eyes move in bursts, breathing and heart rate turn irregular, and skeletal muscle goes essentially paralyzed apart from the diaphragm and the eye muscles. Most vivid dreaming happens here. REM is associated with emotional processing — softening the charge on the previous day's experiences — and with procedural and motor learning, the kind of skill that improves overnight without practice.

Why the two stages aren't interchangeable

They run on different systems. Slow-wave sleep tracks sleep pressure: the longer you've been awake, the more of it you get, and it's front-loaded into the first two cycles. REM is gated by the circadian clock and clusters in the final third of the night, near your body's temperature minimum.

That asymmetry shows up in recovery. After a short night, the brain buys back deep sleep first; REM catches up over the following nights if you give it the room. It also means a late bedtime and an early alarm cost you different things. The late bedtime compresses the whole night; the early alarm mostly amputates REM.

Why your deep sleep number looks alarmingly low

Deep sleep genuinely declines with age

Slow-wave sleep peaks in childhood and adolescence and falls steadily from young adulthood onward. By middle age it's noticeably reduced, and plenty of healthy people past 60 record very little N3 at all. REM holds up better, shrinking only modestly by comparison. So if you're in your fifties and measuring a single-digit deep-sleep percentage against a 13–23% band drawn largely from younger adults, the band is the wrong yardstick. The decline is ordinary aging, not something you did.

Trackers estimate stages, they don't measure them

Formal staging needs EEG plus eye and chin muscle signals. A wrist device has movement, heart rate, and heart-rate variability, and infers the rest. Consumer trackers do reasonably well on total sleep time and on separating sleep from wake, and considerably worse at telling N3 from N2 — which happens to be the exact number people fixate on. Read the deep-sleep figure as a rough trend line. If it says 25 minutes and you wake up clear-headed, trust how you feel.

What actually raises deep sleep and REM

Total time asleep. Both stages are shares of the night, so a longer night delivers more of each in absolute minutes, and the added time at the end skews REM-heavy. Nothing you can buy raises slow-wave sleep the way an extra hour in bed does, which is why matching your total sleep to what your age group needs beats any stage-specific fix.

Consistency handles the rest. A stable sleep and wake time keeps the circadian gate open while you're actually in bed, and REM depends on that timing. Standard sleep-hygiene habits help at the margin: daytime exercise, a cool dark room, caffeine kept well clear of the evening, and restraint with alcohol near bedtime — it sedates quickly but suppresses REM early and fragments the second half of the night.

What none of that changes is the arithmetic. Six hours in bed can't produce an eight-hour night's worth of either stage, which makes the bedtime, not the wake time, the part most people have to defend. Aim at total sleep rather than a deep-sleep target. If you're getting seven to nine hours, roughly 13–23% of it will be N3 — about an hour to an hour and three-quarters — without you arranging anything. The share drops with age, so an older adult recording less isn't automatically short.

How much REM sleep per night is normal?

Around 20–25% of the night, so about 90 minutes to two hours for a seven-to-eight-hour sleeper. Because REM concentrates in the final cycles, ending the night early takes a bigger bite out of REM than out of any other stage.

Is one hour of deep sleep enough?

Wrist trackers infer stages from movement and heart rate rather than measuring brain activity, and the deep-versus-light split is where they're weakest. Age contributes too. Compare your own weekly averages against each other instead of comparing one night to a published range.
